No 40. ~ Virgil Donati ~ 02

Number two on my top 10 list is an insane Australian drummer, 'Virgil Donati!" He is the psychotic drummer behind the progressive metal band "Planet X" and a former drummer for the legendary guitarist "Steve Vai!"

He has taken double bass drumming to new "alien" levels in which most people cannot comprehend! One of his trademark move that I love is his amazing speed and ability to more around the drums so effortlessly. (You can see it in this video below at precisely :50 seconds into the video)

On September 2008, I was very honored and blessed to be able to meet him at Singapore during the Singapore Drum Fest 08. He was friendly and I got a front row seat to watch Donati while he did a drum workshop.

And after he finished the workshop, he threw his pair of drumsticks to the crowd and believe it or not, I was one of the two people who caught it!
To Virgil Donati: Thank you for sharing your knowledge of the drums to us humans! You are an amazing drummer and will always be in my top 10 list of the greatest drummers in the world!

No. 39 ~ Marco Minnemann ~ 03

In third place on my list is the amazing and master drummer Marco Minnemann.

His amazing creativity, groove, and technicality is one that leaves every drummer speechless. He is also one of the few drummers who was awesome enough to be playing for the awesome electric guitarist Paul Gilbert!

Dont be fooled by the genre of music he played in this video, Marco is a very talented session drummer! He was previously a drummer for technical death metal band Necrophagist!

Aside from being a session drummer, he also takes the time to experiment with alot of things that no man has ever done before. Imagine if someone recorded a conversation of you and a bunch of other people, what if someone can also take that conversation and put into a time signature with rhythm without even changing anything from the recorded conversation! Sounds impossible right? Well, it has been done...by the astounding Marco Minnemann.

This is why, he is no. 3 in my list. Simply amazing and I would highly recommend that you should check out his past works and current projects he is working on in his website.

No. 38 ~Grant Collins~ 04

Landing in fourth place on my list is Australia's master drummer Grant Collins.
Grant Collins in my opinion is one the most technical drum soloist that I have ever seen. His is often known for pushing the limits and boundaries of drumming with his four-limbs independence technique. This video shows his massive drum kit and what he does with it. It's pretty cool!

Perhaps it is best summed up by internationally renowned drummer, Dom Famularo, who had this to say about Grant:
"I travel the world performing and meeting many great drummers. It is not often I hear someone who is on the cutting edge of modern drum set performance. Well, in Australia I heard that person...Grant Collins! When you hear him, be prepared for the ride he will take you on... you will remember it for the rest of your life!"

The thing that I love most about him is that the way he plays makes it sound like there is a group of people play a bunch a percussion instruments when really...it is just him alone doing everything. And that my friends, takes years of hard work, commitment and an unending love and passion for the instrument.

No. 37 ~George Kollias~ 05

Falling in at no.5 in my top 10 list is the psychotic metal drummer: George Kollias!

He is unquestionably one of the best metal drummers of the 21st century. His speed and stamina on the drums are out of this world. He can play at speeds up to 280BPM and I am not kidding! He is extremely fast!

For those who dont know who he is, he was born in Greece in August 1977. George got his first drum kit at the age of 12 having already a two year background in music as a guitar player. He now plays for the death metal band "NILE." Though I do not particularly like the band but I really admire George Kollias as being an extreme metal drummer.

In 2008, he released a DVD called Intense Metal Drumming where he instructed on how to be able to play as fast as him and thanks to that DVD believe it or not. I can play up to 260bpm and it is all thanks to his teachings. Which is why he is no.5 in my list.

No. 36 ~Gavin Harrison~ 06

Drummer Gavin Harrison is definitely no.6 in my top 10 favorite drummers.

Firstly, he has an amazing ability in making rhythmic illusions which has boggled my mind for a very long time. Imagine a song's time signature is in 7/8, he can make the 7/8 sound like it is in 4/4 ! That is not an easy task to do! This video is what I am talking about... the intro and verse are in 7/8 while the chorus in 4/4. Just listen to his groove, it can be very hypnotizing for a drummer (especially me).

Secondly, besides being an amazing progressive drummer, he is also very good jazz drummer and is very precise in his timing.

Thirdly, he is also a very creative and innovative percussionist and deserves credit which he has yet to have. These two videos are the proof that he is just nothing short of an awe-inspiring drummer and musician.

Finally, I admire Gavin Harrison is that he is a true musician. He once said during a Modern Drummer Interview: "I dont want to make myself sound like I am cocky and clever like, (hey, I can play in 19/16-check this out!) I want it to have a musical reason."

No. 35 ~ JoJo Mayer~ 07

Jojo Mayer is a guy whom I consider to be one of the most skilled drummers I have ever seen. He has mastered nearly all styles of hitting the drums with just a pair of sticks. Many of you might think that sounds like an easy thing to do but you'd be so wrong to think that. His hand/finger technique is truly amazing, it is nothing I have ever seen before. He is able to gain extreme speeds that have been considered impossible, and he can do it smoothly in a relaxed manner.

Jojo Mayer has the reputation of being extremely skilled with his technique and I find that to be 100% true. It is really a jaw dropping moment for many if not, all drummers who have seen him play the drums either on video or in person.

The method which he uses a lot is call the "moeller" method, it is one of my favorite methods to apply when I drum but I haven't fully mastered it yet. I only know this method through Jojo Mayer's videos. (thanks Jojo Mayer, if there is a possible chance that you're reading this)

If anyone can master his hand technique and apply it like the way Jojo Mayer does. It would be an amazing achievement, I've tried.... and failed... Nevertheless, it is guys like him that keeps me practicing more... to become an even better drummer that I ever was.

One awesome drummer... really love his style and skills.

No. 34 ~ Top10 Mike Johnston~ 08

Now this is a guy you just gotta love. Mike Johnston falls under no. 8 of my list for being so awesome at drums, not to mention his comedic act while performing and teaching. For those of you who do not know who Mike Johnston is, I'll give you a short back story. He was the drummer of a rock band called Simon Says,
"Here is the third guy walking in the beginning of the video."

Years later, he opened his own drum school called "The Drum Lab" in Sacramento and started to post some cool drum licks, rudiments, beats on Youtube and that is when his fame started to shoot off the roof (Also that was when I discovered of his existence).

He is one awesome dude and I also love watching whatever new stuff he has on Youtube. Just recently, he posted a video on youtube to challenge other drummers to become better in doing some drum shedding... so I tried it out myself and ofcourse, I got thrashed by the man himself...

But even so, Mike Johnston was humble enough to leave a comment on the video...

No. 33 ~ Top10 Billy Ward~ 09

O man, Billy Ward. The ultimate "groovemeister". This dude land on my no.9 spot in my all time favorite drummers because not only does he have the most amazing grooves but also he has so much creativity with so little drums. He can use a simple 4 piece drum kit and make it sound so full... it is really amazing.

Besides such an awesome jazz drummer, he is very versatile, once you put him with a bassist, crazy things happen... I kid you not... when I saw him playing with a bassist from his "Big Time" DVD, I was blown away by the awesomeness of the music they made. It was really cool.... here's a short clip of it on Youtube...

What I like most about Billy Ward is that he just gives the oomph in every style he plays. An extremely versatile dude... and also a hilarious man...

No. 32 ~ Benny Greb~ 10

As we are closing in to the drummers that I really like, I would like to name the top 10 in my list of all time favorite drummers whom I can never get tired of. From the beginning of the list. No. 10 is none other then the man who made The Art of Drumming. "Benny Greb."

His groove and style is probably one of the best of the best. He can take a simple backbeat and make it sound so inspiring! I first saw his performance on Youtube. His soloing with grooves was really simple yet jaw dropping... the groove is so awesome that you can almost taste it. I think this video speaks for itself.

Up until today, for some reason, his face just reminds me of Jesus Christ. The one that Hollywood always keeps on portraying. I see a lot of facial resemblance in him. Dont you think so...

Anyways, despite his facial figure. I really love his grooves, it just satisfies my ears very much!

Alright... so what does American Hi-Fi have anything to do with Miley Cyrus?

Well... look closely at the drummer for Miley.... Now look closely at the lead singer of American Hi-Fi.

NO way??? YES WAY! It turns out, the reason why American Hi Fi has not had anything new is because the lead singer now plays the drums for Miley Cyrus!!!!!

I know that some people already knew this a long time ago, but I just found out and I think the majority of my readers did not know that either! This is just mind-blowingly shocking! I didn't know he played drums and he's really good at it!

No. 30 ~Clapping Music by Steve Reich~

For those who have been asking what I've been practicing on the drums lately. This is what I've just been recently working on...

This is a composition made by a composer called Steve Reich. This is a 12/16 (similar to 6/8 or 3/4) clapping rhythm performed by two people. 1st, both clappers will clap the rhythm in unison. 1 will keep on playing the same rhythm throughout the entire time while the 2nd clapper moves 1 quarter of a note back every 4th, 8th, or 12th bar. They will keep this up all the way until the 2nd clapper comes back into unison with the 1st clapper.

Steve Reich in 2006

This is one of Steve Reich's early pieces of simple "phasing."He has done alot more other types of composition that does even more complicated phasing. For those who do not know what is phasing in a musical term; " it just means that two instruments playing the same thing in steady but not identical tempo. Slowly making them out of sync... all the way until the 2nd instruments comes back in unison with the 1st instrument."

I first got the idea to do this when I saw Glenn Kotche's interview at the Modern Drummer Festival 2006 DVD. I was so fascinating that I've tried to mimic it by ear by for a whole year couldn't find it possible until I finally sat down and spent an entire hour writing out the entire notation for clapping music. Surprisingly it is only 12 bars.

You can see Mr. Kotche talking about the Clapping Music around 0:40 in the video. In it, he also demonstrated how he did the Clapping Music with two different drum surface. One on the floor tom and one on the rack tom. The rhythm he did on the floor tom doesn't change (mimicking the 1st clapper) while the rhythm on the rack tom does the phasing (mimicking the 2nd clapper).

So what have I been practicing?... This is it. Trying to do Clapping Music on the drums like how Glen Kotche did. I have to say..this is not an easy task to accomplish. I might post a video of myself doing the Clapping music piece once I have mastered the piece. Which will probably take a while.

No. 29 ~Christian Drummers~

For the past few drummers that I have talked about in my post, I haven't really gotten to the ones that I've always wanted to talk about. The drummers that are doing what I want to do in my life. Being a drummer for Christ and winning souls! The ones that you already know are of course Teddy Campbell from American Idol and Marvin McQuitty of Israel & New Breed. But there are many others that did not come from such Gospel Church backgrounds. Many of them were lost somewhere in their life as drummer but soon became saved.

So here is my salutation and respect towards all these great drummers that I have come to enjoy seeing them drumming.

Gregg Bissonette. The drummer that I have come to realize as being one of the most versatile drummers I have ever seen. He has performed with such musicians like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Santana, and Duran Duran.

This is him now, which kind of shows his variety of drumming styles as being both a soloist and a sideman.

Luis Conte. First thing that come to my mind is not just an amazing percussionist, but also a really humble a nice person. I've seen some of his drumming and listened to him being interviewed and I have got to say, he is a very humble and nice guy. Which is hard to find people like him especially when he has performed with such great artists like Phil Collins, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Elton John and even a rock band like Goo Goo Dolls.

Zoro the drummer. Do not be fooled by his looks, he is one powerhouse drummer for Christ! He was interviewed by Joyce Meyer last year and to what it is like being a drummer for the Lord. I have the interview video so if anybody wants the video, you can e-mail me.

Sheila E. There is only one thing I can tell you. Dont judge a book by its cover. She will kick your butt if you think you can drum better than her. As being both drummer/singer...she has worked with many famous people like Prince, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.

I would say he has reached to a status equivalent to Steve Gadd!

No. 26 ~My Drumming Update~

I finally got the time to upload my drumming on Youtube.

Now, I know that many of you are thinking, why this song? It's so easy to play! or Anyone can do that...

All that is true, the reason I did a drum cover to this is not because of the technicality of the song, but rather how the fact that you can have all the riffs and fills you want. Yet, something so simple can be so catchy. And as a drummer, the beat is very simple and consistent, leaving alot of room for more flowering on the drums. Thus, this cover is made.

No. 25 ~ Andrea Vadrucci a.k.a Vadrum ~

Alright, this drummer is one of the most unique ones I have ever seen. The style of drumming is ofcourse nothing short of excellence but Andrea Vadrucci has really caught the attention of many Youtubers as the Super Mario drummer. And what I mean by that is that he did a drum cover for The Super Mario Bros. game. Sounds strange? At first I also thought of the same thing but when I saw the video, I was really stumped. It was like what if Mike Portnoy had nothing to do and just started playing nostalgic video games... and this is what you'll get.

Basically, in this post I really dont need to say much cause the videos themselves will truly get your attention even for non-musicians, they'll find it very entertaining...

This was the first video that grabbed my attention of Andrea Vadrucci and the rest they say, is history.

Other than the Super Mario stuff, he has also approach the Classical Music realm and add the progressive rock element into them. Now for many Classically trained musicians esp the pianist might probably find the next few videos as an insult because they dont like it when their music gets tampered with. It was for me a very subjective matter because you cant please everyone. But nevertheless, I find it to be something new and awesome. Also, hats off, it has made me a believer that he truly really is a musical genius!

Out of all of these drum covers/arrangements that he did. This one takes the cake as bringing back much fond memories of my favorite cartoon.

No. 24 ~Terry Bozzio & Chad Wackerman~

When these two names come to my ears, I have to say holy #@$!. You will all now why once I show you their drums, especially Terry Bozzio's kit.

The major thing about these guys' playing is that it is not your ordinary, "fast drumming" or extreme drum solos. In fact, they have made something that is really out of the ordinary; making melody on the drums! (I am serious). And that is really not what you would expect to see or let alone hear from a non-melodic instrument. And because of that, they require drum sets that are massive and having each tom, and bass drum tuned differently.

First off, let's talk about Chad Wackerman, he was the first one that really brought to my attention that drums can be melodic! And this was the video that really opened up my mind to having new ideas to be more creative "in a melodic" sense besides just making rhythm.

In this video, his right hand and both feet are providing a 7/4 time signature rhythm, while his left hand is free to lead a melodic fill all around. Soon after at 1:40, he lets his feet to do the rhythm and his hands continue with a solo that is a mixture of rhythm and melody which is one of the coolest thing I have ever seen.

F.Y.I. yes, he composed that melody.
Now, the man with the biggest arsenal of drums known to man. Terry Bozzio.

Although he has been ridiculed by alot of people because of his unnatural approach to playing the drums, I believe he brings out something new, original and not just having a big drum set just for the sake of having it.

He has played in numerous bands such as Frank Zappa, Steve Vai and his latest project with KoRn.

His drum set is what I would consider as the biggest drum set in the world.

No. 23 ~Famous + good = extremely overrated ?~

Okay, so the title in itself will probably explain to you the two drummers are definitely famous, good, and without a doubt overrated. Reason why I am doing this is because many have given false information about these drummers and have exaggerated their talents on the drums to a point where it is unrealistic!

Now this post is not meant with any intention to rip on these two drummers but to really help many young drummers and non-drummers to open up their mind in showing them that there are many other "unknown drummers" who are either just as good and (in my opinion), better then the ones that I am about to mention...

Famous, good and overrated drummer no.1
Travis Barker

Now many of you will probably know him from the band Blink 182 with his speed and ridiculously famous showmanship in literally whacking on the drums. But he is in no way the only "good" punk drummers in this world.

In my opinion, he is a good drummer, but I would strongly recommend that no one should try and copy his style of showmanship and drum setting because it is unethical.

Watch this video first before reading on...

As you have noticed, it may look cool to drum like that, but it will definitely increase your chances of having nerve and wrist damage in your hands. Other than that, if you set your drums similar to Travis' set up, it makes it extremely hard and challenging to play around the drums with ease. Plus, without any proper technique, setting up the drums like that will probably cause any drummer to have back injury if they are required to play songs like these or songs that are much faster....

In conclusion, Travis Barker is a great drummer, but not reasonable to follow his style of drumming and drum set-up. But here are the few drummers that I would recommend to follow and see for yourself if they are of equivalent to Mr. Barker.

Who is probably one o the craziest punk drummers I have ever seen.

Mike Johnston former drummer of the band Simon Says. Currently a drum teacher.
One who is more than just a punk drummer but also extremely versatile in many other styles.

Famous, good and overrated drummer no.2
Joey Jordison

In the music genre of Metal, the drummer that is on every one's lips is a Slipknot member by the name of Joey Jordison.

This Metal drummer is pretty much known for being a member of Slipknot. His drumming has many licks that includes double pedaling and fast singles around the drums.

But probably one of his most well known drumming is not in any of the songs but this particular drum solo that he performed infront of a huge crowd with a li'l element of surprise in his performance that got everyone up on their feet screaming for more.

Overall, Joey Jordison is an okay drummer and can pass as a heavy metalist but by far cannot surpass to the metal drummer that I am about to show. These heavy metal drummers do not need any introduction and any words. The videos that I'm going to show you says it all.

When it comes to powerhouse drumming and extreme showmanship; no one can match up to the amazing drummer by the name of John Blackwell...

John was raised in a very musical family and started his playing since the age of three when got his first drum kit. He studied in one of the most prestigious music college (Berklee College of Music) soon after, his career kicked off and was playing for big Pop, R&B, and Rap artist like Prince, P. Diddy, Utada Hikaru, and Justin Timberlake.

He has made a trademark of himself with his kung-fu like stick twirls when he drums which is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. He does it so fast that at times I though the video was being fast forward...it's that fast!

Not only is John Blackwell good in his showmanships, but also in his amazing groove and style of playing which really nice to hear...

My next post will be about drummers that the majority of readers will know and recognize as famous, good, cliche and extremely overrated. Although not alot of drummers like them, they have truly caught the attention of many non-drummers and non-musicians. Causing an effect that made many people want to play drums. No. 21 ~ Marvin McQuitty ~

Possibly one of the most admired drummers among many aspired Christians is what Teddy Campbell calls "Marvin- the Magnificent- McQuitty." And the word magnificent is just a small word for man this talented!

It began when he just 3 years old, mimicking his father playing the drums, soon it became what Marvin was destined to do.
His drumming is very well known for his groove and uncanny musicality, also not forget to mention an amazing versatility!
Because of his amazing ability to change and adapt in music, he has worked with many of today's big artist like Destiny's Child, Stevie Wonder, Mary Mary, Israel & New Breed etc.

Marvin McQuitty was brought into my attention when he performed at one of the most prestigious drumming event known to man. The Modern Drummer Festival! where he play along to one of his compositions called "Get Your Life Back". In which he performed flawlessly with tremendous fill and groove that made my eyes glued to the TV screen!

"Marvin is living his dreams, walking in his purpose and affecting the lives of thousands with his spiritual inspiration and affinity for God."

I have got to say amen to that! Currently, Marvin is now working with grammy award winner Israel Houghton in his group "Israel & New Breed".

Ever since his appearance on the Modern Drummer Festival 2006. He has been one of the most talked about drummers in the Gospel arena. He has also won the award for being the "Up & Coming" drummer in the Modern Drummer readers' poll. Aaron Spears is definitely one of the most impressive drummers I have ever seen. His licks, groove, and linear fills are unbelievable!

For your information... he is the official drummer for Usher.

Teddy Campbell... as for as gospel drumming goes, he is probably one of the most sought after drummer! He is particularly famous for being the drummer of American Idol. He is one of my personal favorites not just because of his amazing drum fills and gospel chops, but for his amazing ability to groove to any type of music. He proves it very well on the American Idol show, when the contestants wants rock, he'll sound like a rock drummer, when it's jazz, he sounds like he has been playing jazz for all his life, and it goes on and on...

His resume is super impressive too!
Since he's the drummer for American Idol, there's no need to mention that he has performed with Kelly Clarkson, David Cook, Hudson Taylor, Fantasia etc. but he also performed with Britney Spears (back when she was at the top), Backstreet Boys and Christina Aguilera

In 2006, he was invited to perform at the Modern Drummer Festival with many other goespel drummers like Aaron Spears (drummer for Usher), Gerald Heyward (drummer for Mary J. Blige), and Marvin McQuitty(drummer for Israel & New Breed).

I personally had the opportunity to meet with Teddy Campbell at the Singapore Drum Festival, and he is one of the nicest guys you'll ever see and very humble.
I not only respect him for his amazing drumming but also for his faith, during the festival said "When I play the drums, I am only ushering people into the presence of God." When he said that out loud just like that, I really wanted to shout amen! (laughs)...

When it comes to Tony Royster Jr., there is only 3 letters that sums up the whole thing about him... O.M.G. !!!! He is probably one of the craziest -young drumemr I have have ever seen and heard. His drumming is really out of this world...

Tony Royster Jr. was voted #1 Up and Coming Drummer by Modern Drummer magazine 2000 readers' poll and has been voted #2 in the UK 2001 readers' poll. And believe me when I say this, do not underestimate him. He's currently 23 years old.... but watch this video when he was only 12 years old!

Now he has groove and amzing techniques that just blows my mind that he can play better than that video (when he was 12 years old)

That's the thing, the groove, I do not know about you, but I find this is close to becoming a fact. Black guys who plays drum has the most amazing licks and grooves! Dont believe me? I'll let you see all the goespel drummers that I like on my next blog.

Anyways, Tony Royster Jr. is one of my all time favourties because he is living the dream. Endorsed by DW Drums! That's my dream! The DW drums will make you drool!

Hello everyone, just want to take a break on "the drummers that I like" posts and just give you all a short update about what's been going on with me.

Well, about a 3 weeks ago, I was called up by a local magazine "BandWidth", and they said they wanted to interview me for their April's issue. For those who are curious because you saw my site on the mag, yes, I am a Christian. Currently worshiping at a local Church. Jesus Christ is my personal Lord & Savior so do not get confused when I said "Creator" in the interview.

Recently, I had my exams, it was hard.... Very hard....to fail. =P My exams only lasted for 3 days(Wed to Friday), after that, my college friends and I went to the computer lab(which is also a cyber) to play Left 4 Dead (a first person shooter game). To release our tension and stress, and we went to the K-Box to sing and drink ourselves silly (except for me who just drank Coke) on Saturday night from 8 PM to 1 AM. It was a really fun time, funny how a friend of mine got drunk with only two glass of Tiger Beer. "Thank God my friend was not driving that time." Currently enjoying the 1st day of my 3 week holidays, drumming and playing my PS2.

So yea, that was overall what has been happening recently, what about you guys?

Oh boy... this is going to be a big one. A man who seriously has some of the biggest drum kit monsters I have ever seen...aside from being one of my biggest rock influences, Mike Portnoy is probably one of the most respected technical musicians in the Progressive Rock industry.

Mike's long list of Awards include 24 Modern Drummer Magazine Reader's Poll Awards including: 2004 Hall of Fame Inductee, Best Progressive Rock Drummer (12 years in a row!!), Best Clinician (twice), Best Educational Video/DVD for Liquid Drum Theater, and Best Recorded Performance of the Year (6 times) for Dream Theater's Awake, A Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, Scenes From A Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Score.

When he was a teenager, Mike Portnoy was awarded a scholarship to study at the Berklee College Of Music, where he met John Petrucci (guitarist) and John Myung (bassist) . Eventually forming the greatest progressive rock band we now know as Dream Theater. -**HUGE FAN of Dream Theater **-Mike, Petrucci, and Myung decided to stop studying in Berklee and make their own music, eventually hiring a vocalist James LaBrie and a psychotic keyboardists "Jordan Rudess". The past few years since I've heard about Mike Portnoy, I have seen many of his Drum Instructional DVDs from Hudson Music and they are mind blowing-ly awesome!

One of the things I really like about Mike Portnoy is not only the fact that he drums technically but also the fact that he can make it sound sooo nice that it can even attract people who dont know a thing about drums...especially when people look at his drum kit....

Man...there is like a ton of stuff I can say about this dude. Dom Famularo a.k.a The Teacher is probably to me one of the most enthusiastic drummer I've ever seen. He has performed all over the globe including China, Hong Kong, Japan, England, Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, France, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Holland, Austria, Norway, Turley, Phillipines, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Canada, Mexico, The U.S., and even Malaysia!!!

He is known as a drummer/motivator. A really hyper dude with an eternal passion for drumming. From all the videos I have seen him in, there is not even once can I see him frown or have a really serious face on the drums... Not only is Dom an amazing drummer, he has a heart of gold...just watch this video.

There is alot I want to say about this man.... he was not only a drummer, he was really the legend...one of the "Big Three" in drumming. A legend that has passed on...

I'm so saddened by the fact that he is now no longer here... Next to Buddy Rich, no other drummer has impacted the world of drumming like Louie Bellson. Believe it or not... Mr. Bellson was one of the first drummers who pioneered and incorporated double bass drums in his playing. He has impressed us all on his amazing speed. Smacking the face of young drummers like me who thinks we are fast!

But now...we have to move on and remember that one of the greatest drummers on Earth has left us...a legacy of truly amazing drumming and music! To Mr. Louie Bellson... a composer, arranger, bandleader, tireless jazz educator and the world's greatest drummer the world has ever witnessed. 1924–2009

No. 12 ~ Steve Gadd ~

A drummer who took drumming into amazing heights. He is indeed one of the most talked about drummers of this time for being one of the most influential drummer that there is. He is probably by far one of the most imitated drummer in the world. Making drummers like me trying to imitate great grooves and solos such as "Crazy Army, The Mozambique, and 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover groove." Of course, I'm talking about non-other then the astounding Dr. Steve Gadd!

This man is what many young drummers like me call a living legend! His simple yet advance groove is legendary! Probably one of his most well recognized work is with Paul Simon on the song "Late In The Evening" with his Mozambique groove. Using 4 drumsticks "two sticks for each hand."

Being an in-demand drummer, he has worked with many great artists such as Paul Simon, The Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, James Brown, Chick Corea, Frank Sinatra, to just name a few. He is without a doubt one of the greatest drummers I have ever seen!

One song he is also well known for is "Take The A Train"

Michel Petrucciani - Piano, Anthony Jackson - Bass, Steve Gadd - Drums. The solo at the 5 minute mark is astounding, if you listen to it, you feel like he is telling a story with the drums. It is amazing!

Another video which he is most notoriously famous for is a drum solo with Dave Weckl and Vinnie Colaiuta in the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert. Out of those 3 drummers, Gadd was pretty much the highlight in the whole video.

Dont believe me? You can click on the vid and see who all the Youtubers like and agree on who's the greatest out of the 3. If you still dont know which one... he's the one in the middle. And around 2:47 of the video... that is the "Crazy Army" which has led many drummers wishing they could do it exactly like Steve did, and at 3:25, that's the Mozambique!!! So you can cleary see why drummers everywhere loves his style of groove and soloing.

Steve Gadd is definitely one that will always be remembered as the groove king! To me, a legend that I most definitely would want to meet, and see perform live before I die. To Dr. Steve Gadd, the drummer, the drumming icon, the living legend!

No. 11 ~ Drummers Drumming and What Not ~

Hi all, for the next couple of blog posts, I'll be blogging about all my favorite drummers as to what they have contributed into the music world and also how they have impact my life as a drummer. Making the drum set such an awesome instrument to play. I'm a "drum-aholic" and I intend to keep my name up to standard. I've heard of many people who called themselves "drum-aholics" and told me they have no idea who is Steve Gadd, Ringgo Star, or even Buddy Rich!!! Instead, they would be naming the most overrated drummers such as Travis Barker of Blink 182 or Joey Jordison of SlipKnot...

That is equivalent to a guitarholic saying they dont who Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, or Jimi Hendrix is!!!! If you are neither a drum-aholic or a guitarholic and you have no idea who these guys are; lets just say you call yourself a Classical Pianist and you have never heard of Beethoven, Mozart or Johann Sebastian Bach! If that is still theoratically hard to understand, then just imagine you call yourself a Christian and you dont know who Jesus Christ is!!!! It's that bad!!!!

Alright, so from now on, this blog will be dedicated to all the drummers out there and to those who are interested about drumming... I will only be talking about all the drummers that you see on the right column "drummers I like" and more. Accept for Arthur Kam and Anson Lau... for obvious reasons. (laughs)

Each day passes very quickly as I've come to realize. And one thing I noticed is the fact that I look back like 5 to 6 years ago, I noticed that I've changed alot. Just by looking at my 1st blog on Friendster I've changed. For the better!...ofcourse, but there are times when I do realize that I've become someone who is not me! I've become a Christian who is obsessed of becoming a drummer! 5 years ago, I'm the swearing foul mouthed kid who only plays video games, no human communication skills, extremely sarcastic until it becomes seriously hilarious to those who read my Friendster blog and the only 'sport' I do is walking in and out of my room to the fridge!!!! Thank God I"m no longer like that anymore...because if I was still that kid...I'd probably end up like the Angry Video Game Nerd on YouTube... Sure he's seriously funny and super famous but yea... I dont think I can live like that!!!

Conclusion... life has changed. Because of my faith. because of the one who took me in. Because of my Lord & Savior...I am who I am..... And I love it!

SOMEBODY...PLEEEEASE GET ME THIS DVD!!!!!! It's the man who is one of the grooviest drummer the world has ever seen!...Not to mention, he reminds me of Jesus. (laughs*)

So what's a guy like me to do, other than being humble, is that knowing that I'm respected by many musicians and other people as a drumming phenomenon. Hey guys...recently I've been watching alot of drumming videos. And I came across a drummer by the name of Cobus. I have to say...he's one of the greatest YouTube drummers I've seen! What impresses me most about this guy is that he is completely self thought, and all his drum covers are completely improvised... And because of his drumming, he is actually sponsored by drum and microphone companies! That's a really huge achievement for just drumming on YouTube!!!!

I'm pretty much now a big fan of his covers... really love his improvisation on his drumming and gave me tons of great ideas to approach the drums in different ways, and between you drummers and me, I think I might switch back to playing match grip because of him! O_o...or not! We'll see =P ...

Regardless as to whether or not you guys who are reading this play drums, you should really check out his videos... they'll make you wish you played drums! HAHA!

Alright...I was on YouTube today..just looking at some videos and I came across to these videos called "Deal or No Deal". It's basically a game show that revolves around the opening of a set of numbered briefcases, each of which contains a different prize (cash or otherwise). The contents of all of the briefcases are known at the start of the game, but the specific location of any prize is unknown. The value of each of the boxes is indicated by a label or card sealed within it.

The contestant claims (or is assigned) a briefcase to begin the game. The case's value is not revealed until the conclusion of the game.

The contestant then begins choosing cases to be removed from play. The amount inside each choice is immediately revealed; by process of elimination, the amount revealed cannot be inside the player's chosen case. Throughout the game, after a predetermined number of cases have been opened, the banker offers the contestant an amount of money and/or prizes to quit the game, the offer based roughly on the amounts remaining in play and the contestant's demeanor. The player then answers the titular question, choosing:

* "Deal", accepting the offer presented and ending the game, or
* "No Deal", rejecting the offer and continuing the game.

But this one in particular is not about the game but something really hilarious.... as in there's a surprise guest in the show and the contestant doesn't even know it until the host directly tells her who it is....

This is seriously funny. I laughed so hard I almost had a tear in my eye!.....lol. Just watch....

This one is the Australian version... and it is soooooooooo sad.... I felt like crying for the contestant.

My drum kit (the Black Pearl) shockingly resembles alot to Jason Bitner's drum kit. The drummer of Shadows Fall. And what's more shocking is that the dream kit that I'm building is going to be 90% like his drum kit.

No. 3 ~ Ps. Jaeson Ma + Jin ~

My goodness.... last time I saw Ps. Jaeson Ma was 2 years ago at the Asia For Jesus Conference, a very prophetic pastor/ a really cool rapper. He has made a huge impact in my life, when he preached in the conference, I could feel the presence of God when I was there and wept like mad because of the conviction God put in my heart during that time....Also...he's the 1st Christian, Chinese Rapper I've heard of. Those of you who finds his name familiar is probably because he's famous for getting Edison Chen (the actor who had nude photos leaked into the internet) back on track with the Lord. (The host of MTV Whatever Things)

Now, Ps. Jaeson has done it again...this time with the prestigious, freestyle rapper Jin. You know the guy who's super famous for that song "Learn Chinese". Yea... I have his album. (Yesh, I used to listened to Hip Hop and Rap like long ago before I started listening to Techno) =p

Anyways, yea...so Ps. Jaeson Ma somehow was able to meet up with Jin (I've no idea how he keeps on meeting famous people) Probably the hand of God. And he lead Jin back to Christ, which is really a shock to me. Cause, it's like, now I listen back to all the songs he(Jin) rapped about...it's all...you know... things not worth mentioning on my blog. So now, seeing him as a Christian and rapping about how good God is in his songs...That is like...WHOA!!!!

And oh yea... now he raps in Cantonese at HK.... and won awards already.

PRAISE THE LORD!!!!!!!!!! MAN, NOW IT FEELS LIKE A NEW YEAR!!!!! =)

Here's Jacqueline playing a mixture of songs on the drums in youtube. Normally I wouldn't care much about girls playing drums cause they usually have a bad reputation at playing the drums on Youtube with all the wrong techniques, but are always complemented by the guys just because a girl is playing drums. Well, except for Cindy Blackman and Hillary Jones who are extremely great drumming gals...but..after watching this girl play... I'm really amazed.

What else...she's really good, she has rhythm, she's really hot!....SO..a girl who's hot and plays the drums really well......I think I'm in love! >.<

Biography of Raymond Goh

Drums, Christian, and Passion...these are the things that keep popping into my mind when people mention about this guy....

Raymond Goh was born on March 26^th, 1991 in a quiet town of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. As the youngest of Roland and Denise Goh's three children, he was what everybody would call "pampered". For those of you who had known him since the day He was born would know how he was like! In the Goh family, Raymond was brought up in a Buddhist background and was quite a handful during the days when he was just a child, but through thick and thin, his parents raised him up to be a very knowledgeable and mature teenager he is today.

One faithful night, around November of 2003. He saw a friend playing the drum set for a Thanksgiving Event in an Anglican Church, that sparked the idea for Raymond to start picking up the drum set. In the middle of March 2004, Ray started learning the drums from a humble, yet talented drum teacher by the name of Boran Chai. That was when he started to learn how to read drum notations, pull off simple hand/foot coordination, and keep time. After a few months of learning, Raymond's parents saw that he really had an interest in the drums and decided to buy him his own personal 7-piece drum-kit. This was also the time when Mr. Boran along with some of Ray's Christian friends started to share the Gospel with him. A year after, through their life testimonies and deep unconditional Christian love for Raymond. He finally felt the presence of the Holy Spirit and accepted Christ as his personal Lord and Savior in a Christian Youth Concert “Passion” in SIB Skyline Church. This however did not upset Ray's Buddhists parents. In fact, they were very happy for him and respected his faith. For he has found a purpose in life and it was in Jesus Christ.

While still learning from Boran, Ray progressed in his drumming tremendously and shocked his teacher with his amazing speed and coordination. Ray learned so fast that Mr. Boran had thought him everything he knew within a year and a half! Soon after, Mr. Boran introduced Ray to an extreme drummer/ drum instructor by the name of Mr. Shaun Harun. Through Mr. Shaun's tasteful drumming and excellent teachings, Raymond gained a lot of drumming knowledge and applied it all whenever he plays in Church and in gigs.

In the year 2006, Raymond Goh entered a local drumming competition and got 1^st Runner-Up. Out of all the contestants, he was the youngest in the competition. Because of this amazing feat, he was finally recognized amongst his peers and many musicians as a drumming phenomenon! In 2007, he started to get serious with his faith in Christianity and started practising the Christian Life. During that time, Joshua Siaw took Raymond under his wings and guided him in his spiritual walk. Ray grew spiritually and gained much godly-wisdom thanks to Josh. Giving him a deep personal love for God and a powerful revelation to use the drums as an instrument to bring the message of Christ throughout the whole-world. He co-founded the website “RhythmPraise” with Anson Lau (who is also another amazing Christian drummer/ friend of Ray).

Together they thought people how to play Christian Songs on the drums and gave out lessons through Video (YouTube). Soon after, they recruited more drummers for Christ and caught the attention of over 40,000 visitors from all over the world to watch and learn from their videos.

That same year, Ray was fortunate enough to attend a drum clinic from his no.1 drumming inspiration “Thomas Lang” in Singapore. That was when he heard of many other great drum events that were to come in the year 2008, such as the Singapore Drum Festival which that year previously had great drummers invited to the event like Derek Roddy, Grant Collins, Tony Royster Jr., Benny Greb etc..

Realizing that his drumming skills was growing and wanted to take the message of Christ further, Raymond joined a prestigious drum competition known as “Drum Challenge Asia” held in Singapore which had nearly 100 over contestants from all over Asia! (it was also part of the Singapore Drum Festival that was to be held a few weeks after the competition) He auditioned through YouTube and made it not only into the quarter-finals, but also into the semis and finals. For the finals, he played along with some of his Christian buddies including Joshua Siaw on the song Take It All by Hillsong United, followed by a short 3 min drum solo which is now available on YouTube. Ray chose to play that particular song because he wanted it as a prophetic act that no matter what happened that day, he would give his all to God. The results came out and he got 1st- Runner Up. Even though he did not get first, he was still joyful over the whole experience. He was very grateful for both his friends and parent's financial and spiritual support. It was a huge impact for him because after that, he went for the Singapore Drum Festival and met many great drummers such as Teddy Campbell from American Idol, Johnny Rabb, Mr. Q (Jay Chou's Drummer), Nate Morton from the Tv show “Rockstar INXS/Supernova", and the great Virgil Donati from the band "Planet X". (Virgil is one of Ray's biggest drumming influences besides Thomas Lang)

Raymond Goh currently worships in SIB Skyline Church. He teaches the drum set as a part time job at DeNotes (a local music school) and is currently taking a business course at Pine Academy (College). He enrolled on the 12^th of Jan 2009 and his plan is to get a Masters Degree in Business Admin. or Marketing and further pursue his music studies/career in the United States. He will continue to inspire and influence others with the Love of Christ through drumming.

His ultimate goal... "I want to make music that inspires the whole world Spiritually. So that they can live life more meaningfully with the faith, hope, and love of God (Jesus Christ)."
